Just a further comment: In my experience, (Ryanair & Aer Lingus,) airlines don’t charge any credit card fee for extras such as baggage. So if it costs you to use your Visa Electron, just use it for the flights, then buy the extras later with your regular credit card. This is also useful if you haven’t yet decided whether or not you will need all that luggage, especially now that it can sometimes cost more than the flight. But don’t forget to buy it before you check-in, or you will have to pay much more!

If you use entropay Visa electron for Aer Lingus, it’s only worth it if a single fare is €100 or less, as Entropay charge 4.95% to load the card. For example, Aer Lingus charge €5 per single fare, per person, if you don’t use Visa Electron. As the airline otherwise charges €5 you may as well just pay that for fares over (or even approaching) €100 (probably similar in £ sterling). However I believe some airlines offer cheaper credit card fees, perhaps even a standard charge even if it’s a return or for more than one person. A chart of airlines fees may be useful. Meanwhile I’m trying to get a Mastercard debit card from Neteller, which appears to be a good option, for Ryanair, especially as I often buy Ryanair flights for under €10.

My Barclays cash card used to be a VISA ELECTRON with a 4917 number and the correct logo – and I used it many times to purchase airline tickets. When my card expired last year Barclays replaced it with a VISA DEBIT Connect card 4658. I went into my local Barclays bank at the weekend, and was told that my new card was still effectively a VISA ELECTRON card, despite the branding. Man in the bank said that he could tell because the card could not be used as a cheque guarantee card ! Rubbish I say.

I recently used my Barclays Connect card to book an Easyjet ticket and the card type is shown as a Visa debit card on the booking confimation printour. Unable to tell from the EZ paperwork if I was charged extra for using a Visa debit card, but I’m pretty sure from memory that I was.

Aer lingus if you look up the site and go in to the charges link you will see that aer lingus state that there is no charges for electron. I tried the entropay card and it worked for me on the aer lingus site.

Thanks for the tip. Could you post the link here to their website where they state no fees for Visa Electron?
I thought that entropay cards were debit cards, not visa electron.

Aer lingus also offer no credit card fees with visa electron. They accept entropay virtual cards.
