You have to pay the extra card fees even if you’re using the payment card of the airline, so there is know point. I.e. Buy EasyJet flights with an EasyJet credit card, and you’ll have to pay £8 (approx) as a “credit card booking fee”. It’s not worth it.

Heard that there is a £40 “freebie” for taking out an Easyjet Mastercard.
But could not find at easyjet website.
    Does anyone know?

  5. GB says:

Manx air bookings are free with electron but £4.50 with debit cards…TIP just select “Electron” and put in your debit card details…worked fine for me with a Lloyds card!

    • D bennett says:

JET2 say they accept Visa Electron without extra charges, otherwise there is a charge on any other type of card you use.
Trouble is, no matter how hard you try…….the Visa Electron is always declined…….Surley a Trading Standards issue?
Did try the tip mentioned but it doesn’t work with JET2!

  6. Tony Roberts says:

Aurigny, the Channel Islands airline, DO charge for all cards but don’t be fooled by the line on the booking form which indicates that charges are per transaction. They are per person.

  7. Aer Lingus link:
    Handling Fee
Charges as follows: €5 /£5 per person, per flight. Flights originating in the USA, Infant Bookings and Bookings using Visa Electron are not subject to the handling fee.

    Hi there
    Very interesting information. Thank you.

Worth while noting that Flybe charges have now rocketed to a flat £4 per sector – ie £8 for a return flight transaction fee.. which is now a substantial sum if you book a large number of flights every year. Might be worth changing that link above…

Hi Buster, thank you very much for the update! One more reason for this site to keep on existing :-)

  10. Ricardo Verdi says:

    Thanks for your research, Dinis.
If you use entropay Visa electron for Aer Lingus, it’s only worth it if a single fare is €100 or less, as Entropay charge 4.95% to load the card. For example, Aer Lingus charge €5 per single fare, per person, if you don’t use Visa Electron. As the airline otherwise charges €5 you may as well just pay that for fares over (or even approaching) €100 (probably similar in £ sterling). However I believe some airlines offer cheaper credit card fees, perhaps even a standard charge even if it’s a return or for more than one person. A chart of airlines fees may be useful. Meanwhile I’m trying to get a Mastercard debit card from Neteller, which appears to be a good option, for Ryanair, especially as I often buy Ryanair flights for under €10.

    • Ricardo Verdi says:

Just a further comment: In my experience, (Ryanair & Aer Lingus,) airlines don’t charge any credit card fee for extras such as baggage. So if it costs you to use your Visa Electron, just use it for the flights, then buy the extras later with your regular credit card. This is also useful if you haven’t yet decided whether or not you will need all that luggage, especially now that it can sometimes cost more than the flight. But don’t forget to buy it before you check-in, or you will have to pay much more!

      • Dinis Quelhas says:

Hi Ricardo, sorry for the long lag. I was away for a while.
        Thanks for sharing this!

  11. Ralph says:

My Barclays cash card used to be a VISA ELECTRON with a 4917 number and the correct logo – and I used it many times to purchase airline tickets. When my card expired last year Barclays replaced it with a VISA DEBIT Connect card 4658. I went into my local Barclays bank at the weekend, and was told that my new card was still effectively a VISA ELECTRON card, despite the branding. Man in the bank said that he could tell because the card could not be used as a cheque guarantee card ! Rubbish I say.

I recently used my Barclays Connect card to book an Easyjet ticket and the card type is shown as a Visa debit card on the booking confimation printour. Unable to tell from the EZ paperwork if I was charged extra for using a Visa debit card, but I’m pretty sure from memory that I was.

    Ralph

    • Dinis Quelhas says:

Hi Ralph, sorry for the long lag. I was away for a while. Does that mean that Easyjet doesn’t take Visa Electron cards anymore?

      Thanks

  12. eppie says:

Aer lingus also offer no credit card fees with visa electron. They accept entropay virtual cards.

    • Dinis Quelhas says:

      Hi Eppie,

Thanks for the tip. Could you post the link here to their website where they state no fees for Visa Electron?
I thought that entropay cards were debit cards, not visa electron.

      Cheers!

      • eppie says:

Aer lingus if you look up the site and go in to the charges link you will see that aer lingus state that there is no charges for electron. I tried the entropay card and it worked for me on the aer lingus site.

        • Dinis Quelhas says:

Hi Eppie, sorry for the long lag. I was away for a while. Can you post the link here please so I can update the page?

          Thanks

  13. Simon says:

Ryanair now charge for Visa Electron. They don’t charge for Mastercard Prepaid.

    And the fun continues.

    • Dinis Quelhas says:

      Hi Simon,

thank you for the information. I have now removed ryanair from the list.

      Cheers!

  14. Peter Quinn says:

Just to point out that British Airways accept Electron cards at no charge, they don’t charge for other debit cards either.

  15. Terry says:

The same problem exists with Irish Ferries and you can save the 6 euro admin charge by using the Electron Card. I presume that this would also apply to Stenaline

  16. Job CF says:

Does any know of international airlines that accept VISA Electron without fees?
    Thanks

    • Dinis Quelhas says:

      Hi there,

I think the price of international trips (outside Europe) already includes the fee ;)
Seriously, I have no idea. Can anyone help?

      Cheers in advance!

  17. lynn says:

i went into rbs they offered me thier solo card which the girl assured me could be used on ryanair as she hd used it in past. used it on globespan flight and no charge but ryanair have dropdown for solo which would cost me £30 as 3 travelling and return flights. Wanted to take flights as this time ryanair with all thier add ons were cheaper than the rest so used my mastercard still cost me the £30 but it will cost ryanair something too and I get my points and a bit of safeguard as using credit card… will need to go elsewhere and get an electron card now.

    • Dinis Quelhas says:

      Hi Lynn,

thanks for sharing the experience. Could you let us know where did you get your Visa Electron card in the end?

      Cheers!

  18. Jim Low says:

Thomas Cook Airlines do not charge for Visa Electron, here is the link to their FAQ’s which states there is no charge for Electron or Solo:-

thanks for the tip. I couldn’t find the link in their website stating that. Would you mind telling us where did you get that information from?

      Thanks!

  20. RON ORCHARD says:

For what it is worth I spoke with my Bank (Barclays) about an Electron card and they said no problem and issued one. It came as a Visa debit card with Connect on it. I queried and have it in writing from Barclays that it is in fact an Electron card.
Used it on Ryanair but message says it is not an electron debit card but accepts and charges as a connect card.
However used as electron with Easyjet and bingo no charge.
Took the matter up with Barclays who said it is an Electron card and you must take up the complaint with Ryanair.

Now note you say Barclays do not issue Electron cards

    Nothing is straightforward

    • Dinis Quelhas says:

      Hi Ron,

thank you for the thorough and useful explanation. I also have a Barclays account, and it was the first bank I have contacted asking if they issued Visa Electron cards. They said ‘no’. In the mean time, I have also tried to use my Connect card with Ryanair and it hasn’t worked either. Have you had any reply from Ryan air? If it actually works, I’ll be more than glad to add Barclays as a Visa Electron issuing bank, and I will definitely ask again for one.

      Cheers!

  21. Bill Gardner says:

    Excellent site, Dinis.

    Monarch airline do a no-booking fee for Visa Electron & Solo. Otherwise it’s a 3% add-on rip-off.

Sadly, as my flight is around £145, it doesn’t seem worth all this runaround.

    • Dinis Quelhas says:

      Hi Bill,

thank you for your comment. I will add Monarch to the list of airlines!

      Cheers

  22. Ross says:

Thomas Cook also charge £5 for both debit and credit card transactions, unless you have Visa Electron, which is free.

    • Dinis Quelhas says:

      Hi Ross,

thanks for the tip. Do you have the link where they state that?

      Thanks

  23. G.RUSHWORTH says:

Jet2 do not charge for Visa Electron.

    • Dinis Quelhas says:

      Hi there,

thank you, I didn’t know this airline. I will add it to the list now.

      Cheers

  24. ann hale says:

    • Dinis Quelhas says:

Hi Ann, have you had any luck with with Abbey or Halifax?

      • Ann Hale says:

Yes l have got my visa electron from the Abbey. BUT now see that Ryanair are letting us use it free – for the time being !!
